Feminism - What it needs
Being as inexperienced as I am to say about it, but I still
don’t think it’ll cause any harm if I do.
Since a year or so, yeah that’s since all my friends have
started acting like grown ups, I see a lot of posts talking about it. Some of
those get to me, and rest (read most) I just laugh about.
Anyway, that’s not the first place where I get the idea
about feminism from, it came from a far more sophisticated source, that being
my social science book. At that point it was so logical, and even a slight
deviation from those ideologies had to be injustice. During that wave, it was
equal political and legal rights which were being demanded, and nobody can deny
them to half of the society.
Back then the boundary drawn was very clear, but that’s not
the case today. What feminists talk about these days is social equality, which
itself is quite vague. Although at first shot it do seem like how can females
be denied social equality, and they shouldn’t be, but at points it become
complicated. Social equality is a tricky business, since people’s perceptions
can’t be measured. Still I believe that the struggle would be worth if it can
be achieved, though I am yet to come across a way which I can appreciate.
Here I present you with two cases which are worth mentioning-
Equal prize money, is it justified?
Tennis is one game where the fight for social equality
started long back. The recent instance being equal prize money for men and
women in Wimbledon. The points in favour and against of it are both very
strong. Williams sisters (who once claimed they can beat any man outside WR
200, and lost) won the battle, with strong support from feminists throughout
the world. They argued that it shows women as inferiors, standing on the same
stage and being awarded less prize money than the men. On the other hand,
players like Novac Djokovic opposed it sternly on the basis of the fact that
men’s tournament gathers much larger audience, and they play for 5 sets
compared to women’s 3, and he was slammed really bad for it( justified?)
This here was to show that there are undeniable biological
differences, which sometimes merge with social ones, leaving a dead lock.
Women Reservation
IITs will soon be giving 14% reservation to girls, and
that’s what I don’t get (When I’m honestly very happy that there will be
atleast a few girls in the campus XD).
What feminists ask for is gender equality, and the question arises
whether reservation will decrease the gap or widen it. Considering the 9% ratio
of girls in my college it seems to be a very necessary step towards gender
equality. The proposal is based on the argument that the ratio is because of
the social inferiority women has suffered for decades and this is a way to
counter that. On the contrary, it does
show women in a shade of men.
The case study was to exemplify that approaching gender
equality have hurdles built on feminist norms itself.
I guess now it is very evident that feminist movement these
days is far more tangled than it used to be during its initial stage, reason
why we came across instances of public mishaps in the name of feminism. And of
course there are some differences which must be taken care of, they doesn’t
make someone inferior or superior, they just help us identify ourselves. A girl
can’t be a boy and vice versa, so let’s take proud in that. People can stand as equals, without being
identical.
